ESCRS Masterclass - Interventional Glaucoma 

Dr. Khoueir completed his residency at the Saint-Joseph University in Beirut. He then pursued his glaucoma training by obtaining postdoctoral fellowships from the Glaucoma Institute in Paris (UPMC Sorbonne University, Paris, France) and subsequently from the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary Hospital in Boston (Harvard Medical School, Boston, USA).
Dr. Khoueir received the young ophthalmologist scholarship award during the 8th International Congress on Glaucoma Surgery in 2016.
Dr. Khoueir currently holds the position of associate director of the Glaucoma division at the Beirut Eye and ENT Specialist Hospital and a visiting consultant at the Moorfields Eye Hospital in Dubai. He’s a research collaborator at the Mayo Clinic Ophthalmology department. He’s a clinical instructor and lecturer at the Saint-Joseph University medical school in Beirut. He is the co-chair of the associate advisory board of the World Glaucoma Association and a member of the associate advisory board of the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery. 

He is interested in the medical and surgical management of glaucoma and ophthalmic imaging with a special interest in innovative techniques such as minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) and glaucoma laser treatments. 

Leon graduated from the University of Nottingham in 1998 with an Ophthalmology prize of the year. He completed 8 years of general ophthalmology training in Nottingham and Manchester before undertaking separate subspecialty training fellowships in glaucoma, cornea and refractive surgery. In 2009 he was appointed as a dual speciality consultant in the Manchester Royal Eye Hospital specialising in both glaucoma and cornea. Leon’s major area of expertise lies within the field of glaucoma surgical treatment. He is internationally renowned as a leader in the field of innovative glaucoma surgical treatment and he was the first surgeon in the UK to adopt minimally invasive glaucoma surgery (MIGS) into his clinical practice. For over a decade Leon has adopted many innovative technologies to enhance outcome and safety in glaucoma surgery. He is a co-chair for the associate advisory board for the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery and was amongst the founding class of surgeons internationally to be awarded the Fellow of Glaucoma Surgery. He is the principle investigator for many glaucoma surgical trials and publishes his clinical research regularly in peer reviewed journals. 

Henny J.M. Beckers, MD, PhD, FEBOphth

Henny Beckers is Professor of Ophthalmology, Head of the Glaucoma Clinic and Director of the Ophthalmology Residency Program at the University Eye Clinic of the Maastricht University Medical Center+ in the Netherlands. She obtained her pHD (on the innervation of the anterior eye segment and eye related peripheral ganglia) at the Netherlands Ophthalmic Research Institute in Amsterdam in 1993.  Currently she is the chair of the Concilium Ophthalmologicum of the Netherlands Ophthalmological Society. She was the Secretary of the Netherlands Glaucoma Group, an active committee of Dutch ophthalmologists with a special interest in glaucoma, from 2009 until 2022.
Her main research interest is glaucoma surgery, with a focus on studying new glaucoma devices. Research lines also include progression of glaucoma, prognostic factors in glaucoma, diagnosis of narrow-angle glaucoma, glaucoma treatment and adherence, and cost-effectiveness studies. She (co-)authored over 150 publications and currently supervises 7 PhD students.

Dr. Dorairaj is a Professor of Ophthalmology, Mayo College of Medicine and Science, and Consultant in the Department of Ophthalmology, Mayo Clinic Jacksonville, Florida. Program Director for Glaucoma and Comprehensive Ophthalmology, International Council of Ophthalmology, International Ophthalmology Fellowship Foundation and Glaucoma Fellowship program at Mayo Clinic.
Dr. Dorairaj is a recipient of achievement awards from the American Academy of Ophthalmology and Asia-Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology and has given named orations and keynote lectures at national and international conferences.
Dr. Dorairaj is one of the pioneers of minimally invasive glaucoma surgeries and has done extensive research on understanding the biomechanical aspects of glaucoma especially angle closure. Trained at the New York Eye and Ear infirmary and, Beth Israel Medical Center, New York, Diplomate of the American Board of Ophthalmology, and a Fellow of the American College of Surgeons. He has undergone training as a clinician-scientist at the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, India, as a Fellow in Ophthalmic Molecular Genetics. Has held positions of Director of Ultrasound Biomicroscopy and Anterior Segment Imaging and the Director of Clinical Research at the New York Eye and Ear infirmary, New York. One of the founding members of the journal Clinical and Experimental Vision and Eye Research, he is also on the editorial board for the Journal of Current Glaucoma Practice. He has been a peer reviewer for multiple international ophthalmic journals and external reviewer for multiple international bodies and committees including Ministry of Health, Malaysia, and the Government of Hong Kong. Mentored multiple international and national fellows who are working in academic positions all around the globe. He has presented over 100 instructional courses and over 300 lectures worldwide and has been an invited speaker and chaired sessions at national and international conferences. He has co-authored over 350 peer-reviewed publications and abstracts, over 50 book chapters and editorials, and a book on glaucoma management. He has been the program chair at multiple international conferences including the World Ophthalmology Congress, World Glaucoma Congress, World Glaucoma Association, and Asia Pacific Academy of Ophthalmology.  He is on the advisory board for the International Society of Glaucoma Surgery and for multiple industry partners including Alcon Inc., New World Medical, Iridex Inc. and Allergan Inc.

Karsten Klabe is an international well recognized Ophthalmologist and surgeon in the field of glaucoma and the cornea. He was pioneering the introduction of the micro-implants as well as laser (PLT). In corneal transplantation, Karsten Klabe is an expert in the particularly gentle DMEK technique in which only individual corneal layers are transplanted.

Karsten Klabe has received numerous awards for his outstanding scientific work including several nominations as best paper at scientific conference. He has authored and co-authored 100+ scientific presentations and is also a highly respected international lecturer and invited speaker and chair.

Since 2015, Karsten Klabe is a partner of Breyer, Kaymak & Klabe Augenchirurgie in Düsseldorf where he holds the position of head surgeon for the treatment of glaucoma. Before that he was for 10 years the chief physician of the ophthalmologic clinic at the Marien Hospital, Düsseldorf.

Dr. Klabe is a co-operation partner of the International Vision Correction Research Center Networks (ICVR.net) of the Universitäts-Augenklinik Heidelberg and also engaged in the research institute for international innovative ophthalmologic surgery (I.I.O.), Düsseldorf. Karsten has extensive experience as Principal Investigator and Coordinating Investigator.

Andrew is a consultant glaucoma surgeon at Princess Alexandra Eye Pavilion and NHS Scotland Research Clinician at University of Edinburgh, Scotland. He is the national lead for eye research in Scotland. Andrew completed glaucoma fellowship training at Moorfields Eye Hospital and Shiley Eye Institute, University of California San Diego. His research interests now focus on glaucoma surgery, drug delivery, glaucoma diagnosis and monitoring and telemedicine. He is a past recipient of the ARVO Innovative Research Award, Pfizer Ophthalmic Fellowship, Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Fauld’s Trophy and Tenovus Scotland Lady Illingworth Award.  Andrew is a member of the European Glaucoma Society (EGS) Executive Committee and co-chairs the EGS scientific committee. He was a member of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists’ Scientific Committee from 2017 to 2023. He is a section editor for Eye and an editor of the World Glaucoma Association’s International Glaucoma Review. In his spare time he is a qualified classifier for the British Paralympic Association.
