ESCRS Masterclass - Corneal and Lens-Based Refractive Surgery

The Corneal and Lens-Based Refractive Surgery Masterclass aims to provide comprehensive theoretical and practical training for early-career ophthalmic surgeons who have already integrated or who are interested in integrating refractive surgery into clinical practice.
The programme supports skills acquisition in diagnostics, surgical planning, and patient selection and communication to build confidence in performing both corneal- and lens-based refractive surgery procedures as well as managing complications.
This Masterclass programme will include the following:
- Assignment to a mentor to support questions and provide advice throughout the programme.
- Personalized WhatsApp groups with direct access to a mentor
- Four virtual summer modules and two virtual fall modules focused on topics identified below
- Six interactive webinars (four in the summer and two in the fall) with all mentors and students to summarise each module and answer any questions
- Case review grand rounds in London on Sunday, September 13 (required attendance)
- In-person half-day wet labs and dry labs workshops in London on Monday, September 14 (required attendance)
Participants who complete all components of the Masterclass and pass the exam will receive a certificate of completion. There is no cost to participate in this programme. All participants are required to be present and participate in all live Masterclass components. All travel costs will be the responsibility of the applicant.
The Masterclass aims to progress students through the basics of refractive surgery and advance their knowledge with nuances, including the following:
- Fundamentals of Refractive Surgery
- Corneal Diagnostics
- Corneal Refractive Surgery (PRK, LASIK, lenticule extraction, PTK, and incisional astigmatic correction techniques)
- Lens-Based Refractive Surgery (phakic IOLs, refractive lens exchange)
- Complication Prevention and Management
- Building a Refractive Surgery Practice
- Clinical Decision-Making
The programme will reference ESCRS refractive surgery guidelines wherever possible.
The Refractive Surgery Masterclass is intended for ophthalmologists who:
- Are within 5 years post-training
- Have begun performing corneal and/or lens-based refractive surgery or intend to start immediately after completing the programme
- Are based in a surgical facility where refractive surgery technology is available
The programme will include 100 participants globally.
Applications are submitted through the ESCRS Masterclass online application form and should include a detailed CV.
Applications are reviewed by the Masterclass faculty. Priority will be given to surgeons who best fit the targeted audience parameters identified above.
