Purpose

To demonstrate a sustainable, community-based model that delivers comprehensive eye care through a
mobile, eco-friendly platform, ensuring inclusivity and continuity of care.

Setting

Community-based mobile eye care services conducted in eight rural villages with limited access to public transport and eye care facilities, using a mobile electric eye clinic (Eco Eye Express) linked to a tertiary eye care hospital for referral and follow-up.

Methods

The Eco Eye Express, an electric vehicle equipped with portable diagnostic devices, provides services at
community spaces (schools, offices, local halls) and directly to the homes of those unable to travel. The care package
includes refraction, intraocular pressure measurement, fundus imaging, blood sugar testing, and on-site spectacle
dispensing. Referrals and follow-up (fundus imaging, IOP monitoring) are coordinated with tertiary hospitals.

Results

A pilot project was conducted in 8 rural villages with a combined population of 25,000, most lacking public
transport and access to eye care. Within 6 months:

1,300 individuals screened

162 spectacles delivered

60 patients referred for higher specialty care

15 patients referred for cataract surgery

The model effectively reached populations otherwise excluded from care, provided on-site solutions, and ensured follow-
up through referral linkages

Conclusions

The Eco Eye Express demonstrates an innovative, scalable approach built on the principles of people,
planet, and profit. By bringing technology-enabled eye care directly to communities and homes, it ensures no one is left
behind and contributes toward the global goal of eye care for all by 2030
