Purpose

The authors present a comparison of clinical outcomes in patients after implantation of three intraocular lenses – Vivity (Alcon), RayOne Galaxy (Rayner) and RayOne Trifocal (Rayner).

Setting

Lensi Eye clinic, private ophthalmology center, Prague, Czech Republic

Methods

A retrospective comparison of patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of either the Vivity, the RayOne Galaxy or RayOner Trifocal IOL. The minimum follow-up period in both groups was 1 year postoperatively. Evaluated parameters included corrected and uncorrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity, manifest spherical equivalent for distance and near, and the incidence of complications. Subjective patient satisfaction was assessed using VFQ questionnaires.

Results

The Vivity group included 74 patients (148 eyes) the Galaxy group 67 patients (134 eyes) and the Trifocal group 22 patients (44 eyes). The mean UCDVA was 1.21 (±0.25) in the Vivity group, 1.20 (±0.2) in the Galaxy group and 1.12 (±0.3) in the Trifocal group. The mean UCIVA was 0.57 (±0.1) in the Vivity group, 0.7 (±0.05) in the Galaxy group and 0.65 (±0.2) in the Trifocal group. The mean UCNVA was 0.7 (±0.17) in the Vivity group, 0.9 (±0.07) in the Galaxy group and 0.93 (±0.25) in the Trifocal group. Overall satisfaction was comparable in all groups – 8.5 (±1.72), 8.7 (±1.9) and 8.2 (±2.2). Perception of optical side effects was higher in the Galaxy group, 2.13 (±1.41) and the Trifocal group 2.41 (±1.9) vs. 1.64 (±0.96) in the Vivity group.

Conclusions

Implantation of all three lenses shows a high level of patient satisfaction. Distance and intermediate vision were comparable with all groups. The Galaxy and the Trifocal lenses demonstrated statistically significantly better near performance with almost no need for spectacle correction. The perception of optical side effects was statistically significantly higher with the Galaxy and the Trifocal group. Although in the Galaxy group it remained at the level of only mild difficulties when directly assessed in the VFQ questionnaire.
