Purpose

To compare real-world visual outcomes of the purely refractive Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) TECNIS PureSee IOL in two age groups.

Setting

Data from 18 investigational sites in Europe and Asia-Pacific.

Methods

126 subjects younger than 65 (mean age 57.1 ± 5.54 years) and 163 subjects aged 65 or older (mean age 72.2 ± 4.84 years) were included in this sub-analysis of outcomes of a multicenter, observational, single-arm, single-visit study in patients bilaterally implanted with the EDOF TECNIS PureSee IOL.  Binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity results are reported for distance (UDVA)/CDVA) and intermediate (UIVA) at 66 cm. Additionally, postoperative manifest refraction spherical equivalent (MRSE), dysphotopsia, and patient reported outcomes were collected using validated questionnaires.

Results

Younger subjects had a MRSE of -0.06 ± 0.37 D versus 0.01 ± 0.42 D in older subjects. Mean binocular logMAR CDVA (younger/older) was -0.06 ± 0.08 / -0.06 ± 0.07. Binocular UDVA was ≤ 0.0 logMAR in 91% / 89% (mean± SD: 0.02 ± 0.09 / -0.03 ± 0.08). For distance vision, 98% / 94% responded with no need for glasses and 96% / 94% of subjects were completely/mostly satisfied without glasses. Binocular UIVA was 0.10 ± 0.11 / 0.14 ± 0.11, with 91% / 87% achieving ≤ 0.2 logMAR. Satisfaction rates (completely or mostly satisfied) for distance and intermediate vision without glasses were 98%/94% and 94% /91%, respectively. The proportion of subjects who reported being “not at all” or “a little” bothered by glare was 93% / 90% and 88% / 95% by halos.

Conclusions

This Real-World study confirms that, regardless of their age, patients implanted with the EDOF TECNIS PureSee IOL achieve high patient satisfaction and similar visual outcomes for both distance and intermedia, with low rates of bothersome dysphotopsias.
