Purpose
To compare efficiency between the conventional and the new injector developed by Staar Surgical for ICL implantation, focusing on time preparation for ICL loading and inter-operator variability.
Setting
Comparative study conducted in Foundation Rothschild Hospital simulating operating room conditions with novice surgeons performing standardized ICL loading.
Methods
Five novice ophtalmic surgeons performed ICL preparation using both the conventional and the novel Staar injector. Each surgeon completed three ICL preparation with each injector. We measured the time for each preparation and noted complications that occured during these loadings. Mean preparation times were compared using Wilcoxon signed-rank test (statistical significance at p < 0,05).
Results
The novel injector demonstrated a significant reduction in preparation time (t= 2min 49) compared with the conventional one (t= 1min13) (p < 0,05).
Inter-operator variability and complication during loadings were also reduced with the new injector.
Conclusions
The novel STAAR injector system improves efficiency and safety during ICL preparation among novice ophtalmic surgeons.
