Purpose

To evaluate the visual, refractive outcome and changes in various ocular parameters after implantation of Eyecryl Phakic IOL in patients of moderate to high myopia with astigmatism and comparison with EVO/EVO + Visian implantable phakic IOLs, and to compare the company-calculated vault prediction given preoperatively with the actual vault readings at various time points postoperatively.

Setting

Dr. Rajendra Prasad Centre for Ophthalmic Sciences, All India Institute of Medical Sciences, New Delhi, India

Methods

Non-Randomised Prospective, Longitudinal interventional study aged between 21-40 years with 50 patients (100 eyes) in each group. Patients were followed up on post operative day 1, 1 month, 3 months, 6 months and 1 year. Parameters that were assessed included UCVA, BCVA, Refraction, Keratometry, Intraocular pressure, anterior segment evaluation, ASOCT for parameters anterior chamber angle, trabecular-iris angle at 500 and 750 microns, Angle Opening Distance at 500 and 750 microns, trabecular-iris space area at 500 and 750 microns, Lens vault, specular count, higher order aberrations. Vault Prediction given by the company for that size of pIOL for that eye was compared with measured vaults at various time points.

Results

100 patients were recruited for correction of myopia ranging from −3.0 Dioptres (D) to −23.0 D. Mean spherical power of -8.78 ± 4.96 dioptres and -9.85 ± 3.58 dioptres (P= 0.22) and mean cylindrical power of -1.25 ± 0.97 dioptres and -1.46 ± 1.18 dioptres (P= 0.33) with a preoperative SE of -9.41 ± 5.10 D and -10.60 ± 3.71 D (P= 0.19) in Eyecryl pIOL and ICL implantation respectively. Safety index  was 1.02 ± 0.06 in Eyecryl group and 1.02 ± 0.08 in ICL group at 6 months post operative period with results being comparable (p=0.885). Mean vault  was comparable in both groups and the predicted vault was comparable with measured vaults at all time points starting from 7 days to 1 year post operatively. Adverse events, if any, were recorded.

Conclusions

Both Eyecryl phakic IOL and Visian ICL are comparable in their visual and anatomical outcomes at least till 6 months post-operative period. Vault predictability software of Eyecryl corresponds well with the postoperative central vault height.
