Purpose
To evaluate the safety, efficacy, and predictability of the vault after Eyecryl phakic lens implantation in patients with low myopia (spherical equivalent “SEQ” ≤ −3.50 D), as well as the accuracy of the manufacturer's calculator for preoperative vault estimation.
Setting
All surgeries, consultations, and follow-ups have been performed at Instituto Clínico Quirúrgico de Oftalmología (ICQO), Bilbao, Spain.
Methods
Retrospective, interventional, case series study. Eleven eyes of six patients with stable low myopia (SEQ ≤ −3.50 D), aged over 21 years and with refractive stability ≥1 year, were analyzed. Patients with significant retinal pathology, glaucoma, or uveitis were excluded. Eyecryl phakic lens was implanted following a standardized surgical protocol. The primary variable was uncorrected visual acuity (UDVA) at 6 months. Secondary variables included residual spherical equivalent, efficacy and safety indices, refractive stability, vault, endothelial cell count, and concordance between the observed vault and the vault predicted by the calculator. Descriptive and comparative analyses were performed, considering statistical significance p<0.05.
Results
The mean preoperative SEQ was −2.95 ± 0.45 D. At 6 months, the mean residual SEQ was −0.10 ± 0.30 D, with 100% of eyes within ±0.50 D of the refractive target. 100% achieved UDVA equal to or greater than preoperative best corrected visual acuity (BCVA). The efficacy index was 1.0 and the safety index was 1.10. No loss of lines was recorded; 20% of eyes gained at least one line. Regarding vault predictability, 75% of eyes had an actual value within ±200 μm of the calculator prediction and 95% within ±300 μm. No relevant complications or significant changes in endothelial cell count were observed.
Conclusions
The Eyecryl phakic lens implant in low myopia showed high safety, efficacy, and predictability, along with adequate calculator accuracy for vault estimation. These results support its use as a valid refractive alternative. Studies with larger samples and longer follow-up are needed to confirm these findings.
