Purpose
To evaluate visual outcomes, safety, and patient tolerance of the SmartSurface refractive surgery technique in a pilot cohort.
Setting
Single-center pilot study
Patients aged 18 to 40 years undergoing surface ablation with the SmartSurface technique
Study period: January 2025 to December 2025
Ethics approval obtained; informed consent from all participants
Methods
Prospective observational study including 40 patients (80 eyes)
Preoperative assessment: uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), best-corrected visual acuity (BCVA), refractive error, corneal topography
Postoperative outcomes measured at 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months: UCVA, BCVA, epithelial healing time, patient-reported discomfort, and complications
Data analyzed as mean plus/minus standard deviation for continuous variables and percentages for categorical variables
Results
40 patients (80 eyes), mean age 26 plus/minus 5 years, 55 percent male
Preoperative spherical equivalent: minus 5.8 plus/minus 2.0 diopters
UCVA greater than or equal to 20/25 in 70 of 80 eyes (88 percent) at 1 month
BCVA was maintained or improved in all eyes
Mean epithelial healing time: 4 plus/minus 1.2 days
Patient-reported mild discomfort in 12 eyes (15 percent); no severe pain was reported
No significant intraoperative or postoperative complications observed
Conclusions
The SmartSurface technique for surface ablation refractive surgery demonstrates excellent visual outcomes, rapid epithelial healing, and high patient tolerance. These early results support the safety and effectiveness of the technique and suggest potential advantages in postoperative recovery and patient satisfaction.
