Purpose
Maximize visual acuity with the use of selective absorption filters that allow spectral control of visible light, improving contrast and glare sensitivity in variable light conditions such as those that occur during the practice of sports activities at a professional and amateur level.
Setting
Systematic review of UV filters. materials and eye protection to be prescribed in athlets and patients with most comon ocular diseases.
Report of case
Spectral control filters are indicated for various sports in patients with or without ocular pathology, aiming to improve light control,
optimize contrast sensitivity, and provide protection depending on the environment (snow, asphalt, water, or forest).
Spectral light control is primarily achieved with filters between 400 and 585 nm. Additionally, polarized and photochromic filters offer
comfort by controlling the flow of light rays into the eye. Finally, polycarbonate, a highly impact-resistant material with inherent UV protection (blocking 100% due to its nature),
is the material of choice for manufacturing sports eyewear ideal for eye protection.
Conclusion/Take home message
Technological advancements in the optical industry are keeping pace with the visual demands of athletes. Ophthalmologists must be familiar with the
market options to ensure optimal prescription of eyeglasses that not only provide good protection during sports but also correct refractive errors as much
as possible in patients with or without eye diseases, who require it.
Educating the public on the importance of eye care and regular vision checks is crucial for preventing or treating visual pathologies.
