Purpose
To evaluate whether menopausal hormonal decline contributes to early cataract development via modulation of CRYAA expression.
Setting
Cross-sectional clinical study in women aged 40–50 undergoing cataract surgery, compared with age-matched men and women without age-related cataract.
Methods
Menopausal status was determined via clinical history and AMH/FSH levels. Lens capsules were analysed for CRYAA mRNA (qPCR) and protein expression (Western blot).
Results
CRYAA expression was significantly lower in postmenopausal than premenopausal women (p<0.001), and also lower in women than men of similar age.
Conclusions
Menopausal hormonal decline was associated with decreased lens CRYAA expression, which may help explain higher cataract risk in midlife women. Monitoring AMH and addressing early menopause may inform cataract risk prediction and prevention strategies.
