Purpose

Dry eye disease (DED) is a multifactorial disorder of tear film homeostasis involving inflammatory, osmotic, and secretory dysfunction. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of two ophthalmic preparations — one containing hyaluronic acid and another enriched with omega-3 fatty acids — in the management of patients with moderate DED.

Setting

Single-center retrospective comparative study conducted at a tertiary academic university hospital

Methods

The study included 40 patients (80 eyes) diagnosed with DED, divided into two groups of 20 subjects. Group I received hyaluronic acid drops, and Group II received omega-3–based drops, administered three times daily for 21–28 days. The following parameters were evaluated: BCVA, Schirmer test, TBUT, Oxford scale, Bijsterveld staining, and OSDI questionnaire.

Results

Both preparations significantly improved tear film parameters and reduced subjective symptoms (p < 0.001). Hyaluronic acid primarily improved aqueous tear secretion (Schirmer test), whereas omega-3–based drops enhanced tear film stability (TBUT). OSDI scores decreased markedly in both groups, with no statistically significant differences between them.

Conclusions

Both preparations proved effective and safe in the treatment of DED. Hyaluronic acid is preferable in patients with aqueous-deficient DED, whereas omega-3–based formulations may be more beneficial in cases with lipid-layer dysfunction. Personalized selection of therapy should be considered essential in the clinical management of dry eye disease. No adverse effects of either ophthalmic preparation were observed.
