Purpose
Meibomian gland function after cataract surgery
Setting
This is a prospective randomized clinical study conducted at a univeristy-affiliated eye center in Taiwan.
Methods
Patients receiving uneventful phacoemulsification cataract surgery were enrolled. The baseline meiboscore was recorded. The parameters of tear-film break-up time (TBUT), tear-film lipid layer thickness (TFLLT), meibomian gland expression (MGE), and corneal staining were recorded before surgery, 4, 11 days and 1 month after surgery.
Results
The overall TFLLT had no significant change. BUT was significantly higher at 1M after surgery. MGE was significantly increased at 4D and 1M. Corneal staining decreased significantly at 1M. Patients were further sub-devided into 2 groups: baseline TFLLT > or = 60nm (Group A) and < 60nm (Group B). In Group A, TFLLT was significantly lower at 4D; TBUT and MGE were significantly increased at 1M; corneal staining had no significant change. In Group B, TFLLT was significantly increased at 4D and 11D; TBUT and corneal staining had no significant change; MGE was significantly increased at 4D.
Conclusions
It was believed that dry eye condition usually deteriorates after surgery. But meibomian gland function, in our study, got temporary improvement in post-op 1M.
