Purpose
To evaluate changes in corneal biomechanical properties after implantation of corneal allogenic intrastromal rings segment (CAIRS) in keratoconus.
Setting
Retrospective single-center study performed in Foundation Rothschild Hospital included patients who underwent femtosecond laser-assisted CAIRS implantation for keratoconus over a period of 2 years.
Methods
Biomechanical analysis was performed using the Corvis ST (Oculus, Wetzlar, Germany). Data collection was performed preoperatively and 6 months postoperatively, including highest concavity radius (HRC), inverse concave radius (1/R), stress-strain index (SSI), deformation amplitude ratio (DA ratio), Integrated radius, stiffness parameter at first applanation (SP-A1) as well as Corvis Biomechanical Index (CBI) and Tomographic Biomechanical Index (TBI).
Results
Eleven eyes of 11 patients were included. CAIRS implantation affected corneal biomechanical measurements evaluated with the Corvis ST, increasing significantly (p<0,05) the HRC and the SP-A1. Statistical analysis showed a non-significant changes (p>0,05) in the DA ratio, integrated radius, SSI, CBI and TBI.
Conclusions
CAIRS implantation has positive effects on corneal biomechanical measurements in patients with keratoconus.
