Purpose
The amniotic membrane graft is a therapeutic choice that has recently reappeared on the ophthalmological scene, and that allows the treatment of certain ocular surface pathologies, including infectious keratitis. Objective of our study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the amniotic membrane in the therapeutic treatment of infectious keratitis.
Setting
the study was conducted at ophtalmology department,at the Hassan II University Hospital Center of fez, Morocco.
Methods
This is a prospective, non-comparative, reporting 15 cases of infectious keratitis severe with delayed healing and important sign of persistent infection initially treated with an empiric antibiotic therapy standard protocol associated with the following transplantation of amniotic membrane seen no clinical improvement, with a follow-up period of 6 months .
Results
Our study reports 15 eyes with severe infectious keratitis. Mean age was 47.8 years with a male predominance in 66.66% of cases. The most found germ is Gram-positive cocci. Ocular trauma is the main cause of infectious keratitis. All of our patients reported improvement in functional signs including pain during amniotic membrane transplantation. The average healing time was 7.2 days. The main complication was the occurrence of corneal neovascularization.
Conclusions
The transplant of the amniotic membrane is a simple and easily accessible surgical technique that must be part of the therapeutic arsenal of surface ocular pathologies, especially infectious keratitis, which constitutes an important therapeutic arsenal in their management.
