Purpose
To evaluate the role of anterior segment optical coherence tomography (OCT-AS) in monitoring the structural integration of amniotic membrane transplantation (AMT) used in the management of corneal perforations and pre-perforative corneal ulcers.
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, Hassan II University Hospital Center, Sidi Mohamed Ben Abdellah University, Fez, Morocco.
Methods
this study included 37 eyes treated with amniotic membrane transplantation for corneal perforation or pre-perforative ulcers. Patients underwent clinical examination and anterior segment OCT imaging to analyze corneal structural changes and the integration of the transplanted membrane within the corneal thickness. Postoperative follow-up was conducted over 6 months.
Results
The mean age of patients was 48.6 years, with a male predominance (67%). OCT-AS evaluation demonstrated that by day 28, more than 96% of cases showed integration of the amniotic membrane within the corneal thickness. Imaging also confirmed the resolution of corneal thinning in documented cases. At the end of follow-up, best-corrected visual acuity greater than 5/10 was achieved in two patients.
Conclusions
Amniotic membrane transplantation is an effective therapeutic option in the management of corneal perforations and pre-perforative ulcers. Anterior segment OCT provides a non-invasive and reliable method to monitor membrane integration and corneal structural healing during follow-up.
