Purpose

To study the level of expression of apoptosis markers (CD 95), intercellular adhesion ICAM-1 (CD54), as well as CD3, CD4, CD8, CD25, CD38 in patients with uveitis and  macular edema associated with nonspecific ulcerative colitis as a complication after cataract extraction.

Setting

Setting: The study was prospective and conducted in two highly specialized ophthalmological centers specializing in the study of the immune status of patients with uveitis at the University Clinic of the Odessa National Medical University and the State Institution V.P. Filatov Institute of Eye Diseases and Tissue Therapy of the National Academy of Medical Sciences of Ukraine.

Methods

We observed 49 patients with uveitis and macular edema associated with nonspecific ulcerative colitis as a complication after cataract extraction. To study the level of expression of apoptosis markers (CD 95), intercellular adhesion ICAM-1 (CD54), as well as CD3, CD4, CD8, CD25, CD38

Results

A decrease in CD3 levels was observed in 74.1% of patients; a decrease in CD4 levels in 76.6% of patients; a decrease in CD8 levels in 77.1%; and a decrease in CD25 levels in 73.4% of patients. An increase in CD38 levels was observed in 72.3% of patients; an increase in CD54 levels in 75.7%; and an increase in CD95 levels in 76.4% of patients

Conclusions

Patients have pathologically low levels of CD4, CD8, and CD25, and over expression of CD38, ICAM-1, and CD95, which causes immune cell apoptosis, lymphopenia, and an exhausted T-cell phenotype with up regulated inhibitory receptors.
