Purpose
The aim of this case series is to evaluate the real world outcomes of a diffractive full-range of field (FULL-RoF) intraocular lens (IOL) with a smooth transition in patients with high total corneal astigmatism.
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, Goethe University, Frankfurt, Germany
Methods
This retrospective, monocentric case series included 32 eyes of patients with preoperative high astigmatism of 1.5 to 3.0 diopters after implantation of a toric diffractive FULL-RoF IOL with smooth transition. Inclusion criteria were a history of cataract and/or refractive surgery with implantation of the IOL with cylinder powers of 2.25, 3.00, and 3.75 diopters. Exclusion criteria were ocular pathologies or previous surgeries with potential influence on the visual acuity.
Results
23 patients (31 eyes) with a mean age of 56.0 ± 9.7 years underwent implantation of the FULL-RoF IOL. Mean spherical lens power was 18.31 ± 6.42 D with a cylinder of 3.02 ± 0.60 D. Preoperative monocular UDVA and DCVA at 4 m were 0.73 ± 0.42 and 0.16 ± 0.25 logMAR with a spherical equivalent (SE) of −1.77 ± 3.83 D and refractive cylinder of −2.26 ± 1.65 D. At 3 months, UDVA and DCVA improved to 0.05 ± 0.10 and −0.03 ± 0.06 logMAR. SE was 0.10 ± 0.29 D with residual astigmatism of −0.44 ± 0.35 D. UIVA and UNVA were 0.09 ± 0.08 and 0.18 ± 0.10 logMAR, while DCIVA and DCNVA were 0.10 ± 0.09 and 0.16 ± 0.09 logMAR.
Conclusions
Visual performance of the diffractive FULL-RoF IOL with smooth transition showed good visual acuity at all distances for patients with high total corneal astigmatism. These results are consistent with prior IOL studies with low- or non-toric FULL-RoF IOLs.
