Purpose

To evaluate prospectively visual, refractive, defocus curve, rotational stability and patient’s satisfaction outcomes following cataract surgery with implantation of a new toric partial range of field (PRoF) intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting

Vithas Eurocanarias Instituto Oftalmologico. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria. Spain

Methods

Single-center observational longitudinal prospective study including 34 patients undergoing bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of the PRoF IOL Bi-Flex ELON toric POB-MA 877PEY (Medicontur Medical Engineering Ltd). Monocular visual acuity, refraction, monocular defocus curve, IOL rotational stability and patient’s satisfaction (Catquest 9SF questionnaire) were evaluated during a 3-month follow-up.

Results

All eyes had a spherical equivalent within ±1.00 D, and 91% a residual cylinder ≤0.50 D Mean 3-month postoperative uncorrected distance (UDVA), intermediate (UIVA) and near visual acuity (UNVA) of 0.13±0.12, 0.19±0.12, and 0.37±0.16 logMAR, respectively. Mean 3-month corrected distance (CDVA), intermediate (DCIVA) and near visual acuity (DCNVA) of 0.08±0.11, 0.24±0.14, and 0.44±0.18 logMAR were found. Distance-corrected visual acuity ≤0.30 logMAR across defocus levels from +0.50 D to -1.50 D were found in mean defocus curve. Mean IOL rotation was 4.1°, with 91.2% of eyes showing a rotation of ≤7°. All patients reported to be satisfied with their vision. The overall mean Rasch-calibrated score was –3.31±0.94.

Conclusions

The toric model of the PRoF IOL evaluated provides effective distance and intermediate visual restoration, along with functional near vision, and high patient satisfaction associated.
