Purpose
To study the development of glistenings in two hydrophobic acrylic intraocular lenses (IOLs) through natural aging
Setting
Centre for Applied Vision Research, City St George’s, University of London
Methods
Ten Clareon® SY60WF (Alcon Inc., USA) and seven Tecnis® PCB00 (Johnson & Johnson Inc., USA) IOLs were evaluated. Glistenings formation was observed following a novel natural aging experiment after 33.7 ± 0.1 months (mean ± standard error) following incubation of IOLs at a constant temperature of 37oC. Rapid thermal aging was applied at the end of the ‘natural’ aging experiment. Size and density of glistenings were objectively evaluated following a standardised imaging protocol and manual highlighting using public domain open-source software
Results
The median [range] glistening counts were 88 [17 to 1432] for the Clareon® and 23 [5 to 391] for the PCB00® IOLs (P = 0.22) after natural aging. The median equivalent glistenings diameters for Clareon® and PCB00® IOLs were 20.3 [10.1, 50.5] and 12.2 [8.6, 23.4] microns respectively (P < 0.001) after natural aging. Following thermal aging, the median change in number of glistenings was -3 for the Clareon® and +5 for the PCB00® IOLs (P=0.44 and P=1, respectively)
Conclusions
Resistance to glistenings formation of Clareon® and PCB00® IOLs has been confirmed in a natural aging experiment. The higher density and the larger diameter of glistenings for the Clareon® IOLs may reflect inter-IOL variation, which was large. Stability to thermal insult following natural aging may suggest that glistenings development is non-linear and equilibrium can be reached
