Purpose
To evaluate the near reading speed and accuracy using the International Reading Speed Texts (IReST) in patients 3–6 months after bilateral implantation of RayOne Galaxy® and Galaxy Toric® (Rayner, Worthing, UK) intraocular lenses (IOLs), and to determine whether postoperative reading performance approaches normative age-matched values, reflecting functional visual outcomes for daily near tasks.
Setting
Single-center prospective observational study conducted at Eye and Vision Institute, The Medical City, Philippines
Methods
Ten patients (20 eyes) with uncomplicated cataract surgery received bilateral RayOne Galaxy® and Galaxy Toric®. At 3–6 months postoperatively, binocular reading performance was assessed using IReST paragraphs at a standardized near distance of 40 cm under photopic lighting. Reading speed (words per minute) and accuracy (%) were recorded. Data were compared to published normative values for age-matched adults, and subgroup comparisons between Galaxy and Galaxy Toric IOLs were performed.
Results
Mean binocular reading speed was 131.57 wpm and accuracy was 99.4%. Reading speeds were within functional ranges for older adults (160–180 wpm). No clinically significant differences in reading speed or accuracy were observed between Galaxy and Galaxy Toric subgroups, indicating effective near-vision performance for both lenses.
Conclusions
Bilateral RayOne Galaxy® and Galaxy Toric® implantation provides functional near reading ability at 3–6 months postoperatively, demonstrating not only high refractive accuracy but also sustained reading fluency and adequate paragraph reading speed for everyday tasks. Assessment with iReST extends beyond conventional near visual acuity testing by capturing real-world reading performance, including speed, fluency, and visual effort. As a standardized paragraph-based test, iReST offers a sensitive measure of functional visual outcomes after IOL implantation, supporting its value in the clinical evaluation of near vision beyond threshold acuity alone.
