Purpose

To evaluate clinical outcomes following implantation of a full-range diffractive intraocular lens (TECNIS Odyssey™, Johnson & Johnson Vision). The study assessed visual acuity across different distances, refractive outcomes, contrast sensitivity, dysphotopsia incidence, defocus curve characteristics, and patient-reported spectacle independence and satisfaction (PRSIQ) after bilateral implantation targeting emmetropia.

Setting

Retrospective clinical study conducted at the Laser Eye Microsurgery Centre – Clinic of Prof. Jerzy Szaflik, Warsaw, Poland. Cataract surgery and intraocular lens implantation were performed by experienced cataract surgeons.

Methods

This retrospective study included 31 patients (62 eyes) who underwent bilateral lens extraction (cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange) with implantation of the TECNIS Odyssey™ intraocular lens. Target refraction was emmetropia. Visual acuity (ETDRS, logMAR), manifest refraction, binocular contrast sensitivity (Pelli-Robson), dysphotopsia (Halo & Glare Simulator), and corneal topography were assessed pre- and postoperatively. Defocus curve analysis was performed from +2.0 D to −4.0 D. Clinical outcomes were evaluated at 6-month follow-up.

Results

Preliminary results include 31 patients (62 eyes) who underwent bilateral implantation. Mean patient age was 62.95 years and mean implanted IOL power was 21.56 D. Postoperative binocular visual acuity showed good performance across distances. Mean UCVA/DCVA (logMAR) was −0.10±0.10/−0.25±0.08 for distance (5 m), −0.00±0.07/−0.01±0.08 for intermediate (60 cm), and 0.00±0.06/0.00±0.06 for near vision (40 cm). Contrast sensitivity remained within normal limits. The binocular defocus curve demonstrated DCVA of 0.0 logMAR or better from +0.5 to −2.0 D. Reports of glare and starburst were minimal (88% and 75% none or minimal), while 48% reported moderate to severe halos.

Conclusions

/implantation of the TECNIS Odyssey™ full-range diffractive intraocular lens provided functional vision across multiple distances following bilateral lens extraction targeting emmetropia. Visual acuity and contrast sensitivity remained within expected physiological ranges at 6-month follow-up. Photic phenomena were generally mild, although halos were reported by a proportion of patients. These findings support the clinical performance of this full-range diffractive IOL in routine practice.
