Purpose
To identify any features on preoperative Scheimpflug imaging that predispose patients to presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens (PrC-IOL) intolerance.
Setting
US Academic Institution
Methods
Retrospective review of all patients who had a presbyopia-correcting IOL (PrC-IOL) implant at the time of cataract surgery who had preoperative Scheimpflug imaging obtained with the Pentacam HR device. Patients with PC-IOL intolerance were compared to those with successful outcomes. Variables analyzed included multiple keratometry metrics, thinnest pachymetry, asymmetry indices, Q value, Corneal RMS values, and individual Zernike values.
Results
Out of an overall cohort comprising 505 patients with presbyopia-correcting lens implantation, 227 patients (44.9%) had preoperative Scheimpflug imaging performed. The PC-IOLs implanted in this series included diffractive bifocal (bifocal, ReSTOR IOL, Alcon, Inc.), diffractive trifocal (trifocal, Panoptix IOL, Alcon, Inc.) diffractive extended depth of focus (EDOF, Tecnis Symfony, J&J), and non-diffractive extended depth of focus (N-EDOF, Vivity, Alcon, Inc.). Among the cohort, 86% of patients were satisfied after PC-IOL implantation, while 14% were dissatisfied postoperatively. There were no significant differences for any primary Scheimpflug variable evaluated between satisfied and dissatisfied groups (p>0.05 for all).
Conclusions
Basic Scheimpflug imaging parameters were not predictive of patient satisfaction following PrC-IOL implantation.
