Setting
Oftalvist centers in Alicante, Valencia and Barcelona (Spain)
Methods
This was a prospective, randomized and multicenter clinical study registered at the German Clinical Trials Register (DRKS00034576) and approved by the Ethics Committee of the Hospital Clínico San Carlos (Madrid, Spain). Inclusion criteria considered age-related cataract (LOCS III grade ≤3) surgery patients, aged ≥40 years-old ≤85 years-old, able to comprehend and willing to sign informed consent and complete all required postoperative follow-up procedures, and expected post-surgery refractive astigmatism of ≤0.50D. The main outcome measures at 3-months post-surgery were refraction, binocular corrected distance (CDVA), distance-corrected intermediate (DCIVA), and distance-corrected near (DCNVA) visual acuities and the binocular defocus curve
Results
73 patients per group were enrolled. 96.58% and 100% of eyes were within ±0.50D and ±1.00D of the spherical equivalent, respectively, in both groups. Refraction and visual acuities were comparable between the groups except for DCIVA at 60 cm, which was better with the CP IOL (p<0.05). CDVA was ≥20/20 in 84.93% of eyes with the CP lens, and 82.19% with the FVHP lens. These percentages changed to 35.62% and 46.58% at 80 cm, and 46.58% and 35.62% at 60 cm, respectively. DCNVA was ≥20/20 in 57.53% of eyes with the CP lens, and 56.16% with the FVHP lens. Both groups showed similar performance in the defocus curve but there were better results at vergences of –1.50D and –2.00D with the CP (p<0.05).
Conclusions
Both IOLs provided comparable refractive and visual outcomes. Better intermediate vision at 60 and 50 cm was obtained with the CP IOL.
