Purpose

To describe the effectiveness and safety of a hydrophobic acrylic full-range of field (Full-RoF) freeform diffractive IOL.

Our main purpose was to evaluate visual acuities at far, intermediate and near distances after the implantation of this IOL. The secondary objectives were to analyze residual refraction, defocus curves and satisfaction in visual quality of patients.

Setting

MIRANZA COI .

Rodríguez Arias 6º, Bilbao (Basque Country), Spain.

Methods

This was a prospective, observational, descriptive study. We enrolled 40 healthy patients with bilateral cataract. All surgeries were performed by two experienced surgeons (HN and IG-S). Both, spheric (DNRV000) and toric version (DRT150-375) of TECNIS Odyssey (J&J) were implanted. Toric lens was chosen when preoperative corneal astigmatism was greater than 1.00 Dp.

CDVA (far), DCIVA (66 cm) and DCNVA (40 cm) were measured at 1 and 3 months post-op. Finally, at 3 months post-op, defocus curves and patient's satisfaction questionnaires (PRISQv2 and QoV) were obtained.

Results

Mean age was 71±6 years; mean K1 43,60 ±1,50 and mean K2 43,60 ± 1,61. AL was 23,09 ± 1,08 mm and lens power 22,80 ± 2,37 D. We implanted 56,25% toric lenses (mean toric power: 1,72 ± 0,39 D). No adverse events were registered in the follow-up time.

The mean CDVA and DCIVA at 3 months were very high (0.0 +/- 0.1 logMAR) and so was DCNVA (0.1 +/- 0.1 logMAR); while residual SE was -0.50 +/- 0.33.

The monocular defocus curve at 3 months postOp was very flat, supporting the effectiveness of its freeforme diffractive design (Mean VA at 0 D was 0,01 ± 0,12 LogMAR, at -1.5 D was 0,06 ± 0,11 and at -2.5 D was 0,06 ± 0,09). The score of both satisfaction questionnaires showed great outcomes, with 87,5% reporting that they never or rarely have halos.

Conclusions

The new diffractive Full-RoF IOL offers a safe and reliable option when aiming for spectacle independence and patient’s satisfaction after cataract surgery, showing good predictability.

This lens exhibits excellent visual quality at far, intermediate and near vision, meeting the established criteria for full range of focus lenses. The results obtained in satisfaction questionnaires reflect high percentage of satisfaction levels after surgery.
