Purpose

To evaluate unaided distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity outcomes following implantation of the HOYA Gemetric intraocular lens

Setting

Retrospective clinical audit conducted in a single surgeon’s cataract and refractive lens exchange practice in South Wales, UK.

Methods

Patients undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of the HOYA Gemetric intraocular lens (XY1-GT and XY1-G) were retrospectively analysed. Post-operative unaided distance visual acuity (UDVA), unaided intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), and unaided near visual acuity (UNVA) were noted at follow-up and catalogued using CLEARlog. Outcomes were assessed with mean visual acuity in LogMAR, cumulative visual acuity thresholds in LogMAR and near visual acuity in N notation. All were reported as percentages.

Results

A total of 298 eyes implanted with Gemetric lenses were included. For distance vision, mean unaided visual acuity was 0.07 LogMAR and 59.4% (177/298) achieved ≧ 6/6, 72.8% (217/298) achieved ≧ 6/7.5, 83.2% (248/298) achieved ≧ 6/9.
Mean unaided intermediate visual acuity was 0.23 LogMAR, with 15.4% (46/298) achieving ≤0.1 LogMAR, 44.6% (133/298) achieving ≤0.2 LogMAR, and 71.5% (213/298) achieving ≤0.3 LogMAR.
Mean unaided near visual acuity was 0.29 LogMAR, with 90.7% reading ≧ N6, 96.1% reading   ≧N8, and 98.1% reading ≧N12.

Conclusions

HOYA Gemetric intraocular lens implantation demonstrated excellent unaided distance, intermediate and near visual acuity outcomes. These findings support the lens as an effective option for achieving excellent full range of unaided vision after cataract and lens exchange surgery.
