Purpose

To compare contrast sensitivity outcomes between two trifocal intraocular lenses (IOLs), Clareon PanOptix and AcrySof PanOptix, which mainly differ in their biomaterial composition.

Setting

Single-center prospective randomized clinical study, France.

Methods

CLAYRE is a prospective, interventional, randomized contralateral-eye study comparing two trifocal IOLs implanted during cataract surgery: Clareon PanOptix and AcrySof PanOptix. Each patient receives one IOL model in each eye.

The primary endpoint is contrast sensitivity measured as the area under the log contrast sensitivity function (AULCSF) across multiple spatial frequencies. Measurements are performed monocularly under mesopic conditions without glare at 3 months postoperatively.

The planned sample size is 40 patients (80 eyes). Baseline demographic and biometric parameters including age, axial length, preoperative visual acuity, spherical equivalent and implanted IOL power are collected.

Results

To date, 10 patients (20 eyes) have been included. Nine participants were female and the median age was 70.5 years (IQR 12).

Median preoperative visual acuity was 0.22 logMAR (IQR 0.25) and median axial length was 24.45 mm (IQR 1.83). The median spherical equivalent was 0.375 D (IQR 3.38) and the median implanted IOL power was 20.0 D (IQR 2.5).

Patient recruitment is ongoing. At least 20 patients are expected to complete the 3-month follow-up, allowing presentation of the first comparative contrast sensitivity results at the ESCRS Congress in September.

Conclusions

A previous retrospective study (Lee et al., 2022) reported similar visual acuity outcomes between the two IOLs but significantly higher contrast sensitivity with Clareon PanOptix. The CLAYRE study, using a prospective randomized contralateral-eye design, aims to provide higher-level evidence regarding potential differences in contrast sensitivity between these two trifocal IOL platforms.
