Purpose
To evaluate the long-term visual performance of a novel non-diffractive, hydrophilic multifocal intraocular lens (IOL) with spiral optics: RayOne Galaxy® (Rayner, Worthing, UK) in Filipino patients up to 6 months after surgery
Setting
Eye and Vision Institute, The Medical City, Metro Manila, Philippines
Methods
Patients above 18 years old underwent bilateral phacoemulsification with implantation of the RayOne Galaxy® IOL targeted at emmetropia using the RayTrace calculator. At 7-14 days, 30-45 days, 90-105 days, and 180-195 days after surgery, uncorrected and distance-corrected monocular and binocular visual acuity (VA) were measured: distance at 4m (UDVA/CDVA), intermediate at 63cm (UIVA/DCIVA 63cm), near at 40 cm (UNVA/DCNVA 40cm), and near at 33cm (UNVA/DCNVA 33cm). In addition, defocus curve, contrast sensitivity (CS), photic phenomena (glare and haloes), and quality of vision(QOV) were assessed.
Results
Thirteen patients (n= 26 eyes) are included. At 6 months, mean refractive spherical equivalent (±SD) is -0.24(±0.71) diopters. Mean (±SD) binocular UDVA, UIVA 63cm, UNVA 40cm, and UNVA 33cm are -0.15(±0.16), 0.28(±0.09), 0.13(±0.03), and 0.10(±0.08) logMAR; while mean (±SD) binocular CDVA, DCIVA 63cm, DCNVA 40cm, and DCNVA 33cm are -0.18(±0.08), 0.27(±0.07), 0.14(±0.03), and 0.10(±0.08) logMAR, respectively. Binocular defocus curve shows a range of vision of >0.20 logMAR from +2.0 to -3.0D. Mean binocular CS (logCS) are 1.65(±0.08) at 1m and 1.61(±0.13) at 40cm. Mean binocular halo size and intensity are 14/100 and 16/100. Mean binocular glare size and intensity are 12/100 and 14/100. Mean QOV is 90.3/100.
Conclusions
Bilateral implantation with the RayOne Galaxy® IOL provides excellent long-term full range of vision from distance to near at 33cm while maintaining high contrast sensitivity, low photic phenomena, and good patient-reported quality of vision at 6 months after surgery.
