Purpose

Prospective Interventional case series to investigate visual and refractive outcomes of patients receiving a new spiral continuous full range of field (C-FRoF) intraocular lens (RayOne Galaxy, Rayner Intraocular Lens LTD- United Kingdom)

Setting

RB Vision, Buenos Aires, Argentina. Patients who underwent bilateral phacoemulsification surgery with a follow up visit at twelve months were enrolled. Outcomes measures: uncorrected visual acuity (at distance, intermediate and near), refractive outcomes, photic phenomena and mesopic pupil size correlation.

Methods

Forty-six eyes of twenty tree patients (28 non-Toric and 18 Toric Galaxy IOLs) were included. A comprehensive ophthalmic examination was carried out in each patient, including ARM, UDVA, UIVA, UNVA, slit lamp and fundus examination, optical biometry, mesopic pupillometry, topography (Topcon Aladdin)), specular microscopy (Topcon SP-1P), and macular and fibre OCT (Topcon Maestro 2). Mu Chord was considered to assess pupil decentration.   Inclusion criteria were  bilaterally implanted patients with the IOL available for 12 months follow-up examination .  Exclusion criteria were cognitive deficit preventing patients from reading. Distance, intermediate and near vision were evaluated at 300, 60 and 40 cm respectively (Precision Vision Chart).

Results

All surgeries were performed uneventfully. Mean preoperative SE was 1.41 dioptres SD 2.37 (mean sphere 1.99 SD 2.42, mean cylinder -1.41 SD 2.37). Mean postoperative SE was -0.22 dioptres SD 0.67 (mean sphere -0.55 SD 0.52, mean cylinder -0.50 SD 0.74) at the 12-month follow up. Mean preoperative UDVA was 0.53 SD 0.26 LogMar. Mean postoperative UDVA was 0.06 SD 0.09 LogMar at the 12 month follow up. UIVA and UNVA were 0.0 LogMar in all eyes. No correlation was found with regards to pupil centration (MEAN MU CHORD 0.27 SD 0.23 - mean values x -0.02 SD 0.32 y -0.06 SD 0.21) and postoperative UDVA. Photic phenomena were inquired actively, no patient reported halos and only 4 of 23 patients reported non bothersome glare at distance vision.

Conclusions

RayOne Galaxy IOL, designed with a unique non diffractive spiral optic provides excellent visual outcomes, minimal photic phenomena and apparent pupil independence in relation to IOL centration. A higher N of cases should be evaluated for further confirmation of these findings and patient reported outcome measures should be collected to better comprehend visual disturbances and level of satisfaction.
