Purpose

To evaluate the preliminary clinical outcomes of a Purely Refractive Full Range of Field Intraocular Lens with optical profile that combines spherical aberrations of the 4th and 6th order of opposite signs in presbyopia surgery

Setting

Department of Ophthalmology. Vithas International University Hospital. Madrid-Alicante Spain

Methods

A prospective, multicenter, longitudinal, observational, and non-comparative study were performed  including a total of 12 patients with mean age 63,34 ± 7,26 years old (r 51-77) All cases underwent uncomplicated cataract surgery with intraocular lens implant of LuxLife® IOL (Bausch&Lomb). Visual acuity was assessed 3 months post-surgery, including corrected and uncorrected visual acuity  for far ((UDVA, CDVA), intermediate (UIVA, DCIVA), and near (UNAV, DCNVA)  distances, photopic and mesopic achromatic contrast sensitivity (CS) (CSV-1000 test), halos and glare (Eyeland Design Network GmbH®), improvement in quality of life, satisfaction rates, and spectacle independence.

Results

At 3 month follow-up visual acuity results were: binocular CDVA 0.05 ± 0,05 logMAR , DCIVA 0.10 ± 0,10 logMAR , and DCNVA 0,07 ± 0,07  logMAR. The defocus curve obtained demonstrate a continous visual acuity profile maintaining ≤ 0.2 logMAR through different focal distances at least 2,3 diopters of defocus. Regarding distance CS at 3,6,12,18 cycles/degree in photopic CS were 6 ± 1,21, 8,02 ± 0,76, 5,60 ± 1,28, 2,82 ± 1,08 and in mesopic CS 6,35 ± 1,43, 6,20 ± 1,23, 7,07 ± 1,65, 2.15 ± 1,29 respectively. Halometry showed a halo size less than 50 in all cases, except for one patient who complained of halos and difficulty driving at night. Spectacle independence was achieved in 10 patients and 2 patients occasionally use glasses for reading.

Conclusions

These preliminary results suggest that this purelly refractive FRoF IOL evaluated could achieve functional levels of visual acuity for far, intermediate and near distances  with a continous defocus curve profile,  minimal impact on contrast sensitivity and  spectacle independence. The limitations of the study are the small number of cases and the follow-up time. Further studies are needed to corroborate these preliminary conclusions.
