Purpose

Optically characterise and clinically evaluate the performance of a bilateral implant with Vivinex Gemetric trifocal intraocular lens (HOYA Surgical Optics).

Setting

Fernández-Vega Ophthalmological Institute.

Methods

The optical performance of the intraocular lens was analysed using the modulation transfer function across the focus (TF-MTFa) area. The clinical study included manifest refraction, uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA) and corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA), distance corrected intermediate visual acuity (DCIVA) and distance corrected near visual acuity (DCNVA), binocular photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity (CS), and binocular blur curve. The postoperative evaluation was performed three months after surgery.

Results

Optimal optical quality is observed in distance focus on the TF-MTFa curve. From there, optical quality slowly and continuously degrades for intermediate and near vision. The clinical study included 30 eyes from 15 patients. The efficacy index was greater than 1, and 100% of the eyes had spheres between ±0.50 D. All gained lines of vision during the postoperative period. The clinical evaluation showed excellent visual and refractive results, with a depth of field of +1.00 to -2.50 D and visual acuity greater than 0.2 logMAR. Binocular contrast sensitivity at distance was within normal limits.

Conclusions

Vivinex Gemetric (Hoya) is an effective, predictable and safe IOL in terms of visual performance, and based on our clinical results, this is a full depth-of-field IOL with continuous transition. It has a trifocal diffractive optical design, a hydrophobic acrylic material and a monoblock platform with C-shaped haptics.
