Purpose
Achieving high levels of postoperative spectacle independence in cataract patients remains a clinical challenge. A novel Full Depth of Field intraocular lens (IOL) with spiral optic design aims to provide continuous visual performance across distance, intermediate, and near ranges while potentially reducing photic phenomena. The purpose of this prospective study was to evaluate visual and functional outcomes three months after bilateral implantation of this lens.
Setting
Medical University of Vienna
Methods
In this prospective clinical study, 30 patients were evaluated three months after bilateral implantation of a presbyopia-correcting intraocular lens featuring spiral optics. Monocular and binocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), intermediate visual acuity (UIVA, DCIVA), and near visual acuity (UNVA, DCNVA) were measured in logMAR.
Monocular and binocular defocus curves were obtained to assess functional depth of focus. Contrast sensitivity was measured using the RALV® system (Real Artificial Lens Vision; decimal format). Statistical analysis was descriptive.
Results
At three months postoperatively, mean monocular UDVA and CDVA were 0.08 ± 0.08 and 0.00 ± 0.07 logMAR, respectively. Mean monocular UIVA and DCIVA were 0.08 ± 0.08 and 0.10 ± 0.08 logMAR, while monocular UNVA and DCNVA were 0.17 ± 0.10 and 0.19 ± 0.09 logMAR.
Binocularly, mean UDVA was 0.02 ± 0.08 logMAR, UIVA 0.01 ± 0.07 logMAR, and UNVA 0.11 ± 0.09 logMAR.
Defocus curve analysis demonstrated a plateau profile with visual acuity of < 0.2 logMAR across a continuous defocus range of 2.3 diopters*. Mean contrast sensitivity was 1.02 ± 0.31 logCS (Weber). The comparative results with RALV® will be presented.
Conclusions
Three-month results indicate that the investigated Full Depth of Field intraocular lens with spiral optics provides stable and high-quality visual performance across multiple distances. Both monocular and binocular outcomes demonstrated functional range of vision with satisfactory contrast sensitivity. This lens represents a promising option for patients seeking increased postoperative spectacle independence with potentially reduced photic disturbances.
