Purpose

This analysis aims to present the long-term visual acuity and refractive outcomes of a full range of depth of field IOL with a spiral non-diffractive optic design. To our knowledge this is the only analysis proving long term data with a follow up at 12 months with this lens.

Setting

Medical University of Vienna, Austria, Clinica Bavaria, Valencia, Spain, Instituto Medico QWuiurgia Oftalmologia, Vithas, Spain, Vision Scotland, Edinburgh, Scoltland, Universitesi Tip Fakültesi, Istanbul, Turkey, Vision Care Clinic, Bristol, United Kingdom

Methods

Preoperatively, a slit lamp examination, keratometry and biometry, as well as subjective refraction was performed. The follow-up visits were scheduled for one, three, six and twelve months after surgery and monocular CDVA, UDVA (at 4 m), UIVA, DCIVA (at 66 cm), UNVA and DCNVA (at 40 cm) were measured.

Results

At twelve months post op the monocular (n=103) UDVA, UIVA and UNVA were 0.03±0.11, 0.08±0.14, and 0.17±0.13, respectively.

The monocular CDVA, DCIVA and DCNVA were -0.01±0.11, 0.08±0.14, and 0.17±0.13, respectively. Cumulatively 98.06% of patients achieved an uncorrected binocular VA of 0.2 logMAR or better for distance and 88.35% achieved an uncorrected binocular intermediate vision. At near 81.55% of patients achieved an uncorrected VA of 0.2 logMAR or better.

Conclusions

The monocular visual acuities showed excellent results for far, intermediate and near distances. The results remained stable at twelve months follow-up. The results demonstrate that the full range of depth of field IOL featuring a unique spiral design provides a high visual acuity at various distances. These findings may suggest that patients can reach a high level of spectacle independent vision similar to what we achieve with established diffractive trifocal IOLs.
