Purpose

Comparison of patient-reported and functional outcomes, as well as reading performance of patients after bilateral implantation of two partial range of field intraocular lenses (IOL).

Setting

The David J Apple Center for Vision Research, Department of Ophthalmology, Heidelberg University Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany

Methods

This prospective, clinical study, included 60 eyes from 30 patients who had undergone cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of Vivinex Impress XY1-EM (Hoya Surgical Optics, Singapore) or Clareon CNA0T0 (Alcon, Freiburg, Switzerland). The following parameters were assessed from 3 months after surgery (monocularly and binocularly): uncorrected and distance-corrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity (UDVA/CDVA/UIVA/DCIVA/UNVA/DCNVA), reading performance (Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD)), defocus curve (from +1 to -3.5 D), contrast sensitivity, and halo/glare assessment, as well as pupillometry (photopic, mesopic) and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) using the validated Cataract and Lens Ophthalmic Questionnaire (CLOQ).

Results

The binocular distance-corrected defocus curve showed continuous visual acuity of 0.10 logMAR or better down to -1.5 D with the Impress, and down to -1 dpt with the Clareon. For the Impress, binocular visual acuity was logMAR UDVA/CDVA (0.00/-0.06), UIVA/DCIVA (0.03/0.02), UNVA/DCNVA (0.19/0.24), and for the Clareon, UDVA/CDVA (-0.03/-0.07), UIVA/DCIVA (0.03/0.08), UNVA/DCNVA (0.21/0.3). Contrast sensitivity was within the normal range for the patient's age for both lenses, photopic phenomena and functional reading performance were comparable between the two lenses, with a tendency toward better intermediate reading performance with the Impress IOL.

Conclusions

Bilateral implantation of the Impress IOL show a tendency to providing greater coverage of functional vision from distance to intermediate range than the Clareon IOL, while the distance visual acuity was slightly superior with the Clareon IOL. Contrast sensitivity, photopic phenomena and PROMs appear to be comparable between both study IOLs.
