Purpose
Comparison of patient-reported and functional outcomes, as well as reading performance of patients after bilateral implantation of a non-diffractive, bessel optic, hydrophobic, monofocal plus intraocular lenses (IOL).
Setting
The David J Apple Center for Vision Research, Department of Ophthalmology, Heidelberg University Hospital, Heidelberg, Germany
Methods
In this prospective clinical study, 50 eyes from 25 patients who had undergone cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of an Extend (toric) SL IOL (Hanita Lenses HQ, Kibbutz Hanita, Israel). The following parameters were assessed from 3 months after surgery (monocularly and binocularly): uncorrected and distance-corrected distance, intermediate, and near visual acuity (UDVA/CDVA/UIVA/DCIVA/UNVA/DCNVA), functional reading performance using the Salzburg Reading Desk (SRD), defocus curve (from +1 to -3.5 D), contrast sensitivity, and halo/glare assessment, as well as pupillometry (photopic, mesopic) and patient-reported outcomes (PROMs) using the validated Cataract and Lens Ophthalmic Questionnaire (CLOQ).
Results
Binocular distance-corrected defocus curve showed continuous visual acuity of 0.10 logMAR or better down to -1.75 dpt with the Extend IOL. Binocular visual acuity in logMAR was UDVA/CDVA (0.01/-0.08), UIVA/DCIVA (0.07/0.13), UNVA/DCNVA (0.23/0.28). Functional binocular reading visual acuity in 80 cm was 0.1 logMAR. Contrast sensitivity was within the normal range for the patient's age, patient satisfaction was high, and photopic phenomena were minimal.
Conclusions
The bilateral implantation of the Extend IOL provides good functional vision from distance to intermediate range with a satisfactory safety profile and high patient satisfaction.
