Purpose
To compare the refractive surgical outcomes in patients with Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) implantation who have a history of previous LASIK vs RK surgery.
Setting
Patient's with a history of previous RK and LASIK desired to be without glasses when they were young. These same patients are wanting the same outcomes after their cataract surgery. Unfortunately, there is no single lens formula that provides the same level of refractive success as laser vision correction surgery. The Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) is the only intraocular lens that can be adjusted after cataract surrgery to correct for any residual refractive error, especially in these patients.
Methods
This is a retrospective analysis of a total of 36 eyes, in 20 patients. 10 patients were post-RK (17 eyes), 10 patients were post-LASIK (19 eyes). All eyes received the Light Adjustable Lens (LAL) by RxSight. No patient had any history of retinal or optic nerve disease. All patients underwent surgery for visually significant cataracts and desired to reduce, if not eliminate the need for spectacles post-operatively. All patients received the appropriate number of treatments with the Light Delivery Device (LDD).
Results
In the post-LASIK group, 40% of patients were 6/5 and 90% were 6/6 or better UCDVA. The average SE was +0.125 D. 33% were J1+ UCNVA. The average SE: -1.22D
In the post-RK group, 40% of patients were 6/5 and 60% were 6/6 or better UCDVA. The average SE was +0.25D. 37.5% were J1+ UCNVA. The average SE: -1D
Conclusions
The LAL IOL is an excellet choice to help patients with a history of prior refaractive surgery achieve their goal of spectacle independence.
