Purpose
To evaluate the visual performance and patient satisfaction after bilateral implantation of a hydrophobic, non-constant aberration correcting, aspheric, monofocal IOL (CT LUCIA 621P, Carl Zeiss Meditec, Dublin, CA).
Setting
3 U.S. centers (Indianapolis, IN; Somerset, Kentucky; Hershey, Pennsylvania)
Methods
This prospective, single-arm, post-market clinical trial included participants ≥50 years with uncomplicated age-related cataract and no vision-limiting pathology who underwent bilateral phacoemulsification with in-the-bag implantation of a CT LUCIA 621P IOL. Outcome measures were monocular and binocular corrected and uncorrected visual acuities (VA) at distance and intermediate under photopic and mesopic conditions, defocus curves (+1.00 to –3.00 D range), MRSE, and VFQ-25 scores. Follow-up was performed 1 day, 1 week, 1 month, and 3 months postoperatively. The primary efficacy endpoint was the proportion of patients with monocular corrected distance VA ≥ 20/40 at three months.
Results
Results from 56 eyes of 28 patients are reported in this analysis. At the 3-month follow-up, mean monocular photopic uncorrected distance and intermediate VA were 0.06± 0.14 logMAR and 0.16± 0.10 logMAR respectively. Monocular CDVA was 20/40 or better in 98% of eyes under photopic conditions and in 95% under mesopic conditions. Monocular and binocular defocus curves showed that the CT LUCIA 621P maintained VAs ≤0.3 logMAR across +0.50 D to –1.0 D range. Mean MRSE was 0.07 ± 0.38 D at 1 month and 0.07 ± 0.40 D at 3 months, with 98% of patients within ±1.0 D. Total VFQ-25 scores improved from ~68 at baseline to ~89 at one-month and ~90 at three-month follow-up.
Conclusions
The current study demonstrates that the CT LUCIA 621P hydrophobic acrylic monofocal IOL, featuring an optimized non-constant aberration-correcting design, provides satisfactory distance and intermediate vision with high patient satisfaction.
