Purpose

To evaluate early outcomes in amblyopic eyes after aspheric monofocal intraocular lens (IOL) with higher order aspheric optic implantation.

Setting

Ophthalmology Unit, Bambino Gesù IRCCS Children’s Hospital, Rome, Italy

Methods

Twenthy eyes of fifteen patients  (mean age 5.0±1.5 years) with monolateral infantile cataract were evaluated eighteen months after no stitch surgery with simultaneous Tecnis Eyhance ICB00 aspheric monofocal IOL (Johnson&Johnson Vision) implantation. After surgery all patients started patching  the healthy eye 4 hours daily  for treating amblyopia. Distance Corrected Visual Acuity (DCVA) calculated in logarithm of the minimum angle of resolution was assessed by E-ETDRS protocol (CSO Vision Chart).  Distance Corrected Intermediate Visual Acuity (DCIVA) and Near Corrected Visual Acuity (NCVA), respectively measured at 60 and 40cm, were calculated using the Jaeger chart. DCIVA was measured with distance correction and without addition.

Results

Eighteen months postoperative mean DCVA was 0.20±0.3 logMAR,  mean DCIVA and NCVA were respectively  4±1J and 2±1J. NCVA was measured with addition.

Conclusions

These early findings suggest that aspheric monofocal IOL with higher order aspheric optic could provide good DCIVA without need of addition also in amblyopic eyes.
