Purpose
To evaluate the visual outcomes, patient satisfaction, spectacle independence and photic phenomena after bilateral implantation of a new non-diffractive extended depth-of-focus intraocular lens using mini-monovision approach in Chinese cataract population.
Setting
TianJin Medical University Eye Hospital
Methods
This is a single-center prospective study including 50 patients who underwent bilateral cataract surgery. To achieve mini-monovision, the spherical equivalent (SE) was calculated between -0.25 and +0.25 D for the dominant eye, and between -0.5 and -0.75 D for the non-dominant eye. The main outcomes were uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected and distance-corrected near visual acuity and intermediate visual acuity at 40 cm, 66 cm (UNVA, DCNVA, UIVA, DCIVA) 3 months postoperatively. Secondary outcome parameters were binocular defocus curve, patient satisfaction including, spectacle independence and photic phenomena.
Results
Binocular UDVA and CDVA was 0.02±0.05logMAR, 0.01±0.03logMAR respectively three months after surgery. Meanwhile binocular UNVA and DCNVA achieved 0.18±0.05logMAR, 0.16±0.08logMAR respectively, while, UIVA and DCIVA was 0.09±0.06MAR, 0.08±0.04MAR respectively. The defocus curve showed that when the diopter ranged from -2.0D to -3.0D, the average binocular visual acuity was less than 0.22logMAR, indicating a better intermediate to near visual performance than monocular visual acuity. All patients experienced spectacle independence for distance and intermediate vision task after surgery, and were quite satisfied with their vision. No visual disturbances were reported in this study.
Conclusions
Patients implanted with a new non-diffractive depth-of-field extended IOL using the mini-monovision technique showed improved distance and intermediate visual acuity, reduced need for glasses, and expressed a high degree of satisfaction.
