Purpose
To evaluate preliminary monocular visual and refractive outcomes of a novel non-diffractive full-range intraocular lens (Asqelio™ PairedFocus™) for presbyopia correction, using the contralateral Asqelio™ EDOF intraocular lens as an intraindividual control.
Setting
OftalVist Alicante, Alicante, and Hospital La Arruzafa, Cordoba (Spain).
Methods
This prospective pilot study included 15 patients undergoing bilateral cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Each patient received an Asqelio™ PairedFocus™ intraocular lens in one eye and an Asqelio™ EDOF intraocular lens in the fellow eye. Preoperative demographic, biometric, and refractive parameters were comparable between eyes. Monocular uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity at distance (4 m), intermediate (67 cm), and near (40 cm), manifest refraction, and monocular defocus curves were evaluated three months postoperatively. Functional vision was defined as visual acuity ≤0.20 logMAR.
Results
At three months postoperatively, monocular uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity with the PairedFocus IOL was comparable to the EDOF control lens. Defocus curve analysis showed similar performance at distance and low negative vergences for both lenses. However, the PairedFocus IOL extended the range of functional monocular vision toward near distances, maintaining visual acuity ≤0.20 logMAR up to approximately −3.0 D of defocus, whereas the EDOF lens showed a more rapid decline beyond intermediate vergences. Refractive predictability was high, with a mean residual spherical equivalent of 0.10 ± 0.31 D and a mean residual cylinder of −0.31 ± 0.35 D. No unexpected adverse events were observed.
Conclusions
In this preliminary fellow-eye comparison, the non-diffractive Asqelio™ PairedFocus™ intraocular lens maintained distance visual performance comparable to a standard EDOF lens while extending functional monocular vision toward near vergences of approximately −3.0 D. These findings support the PairedFocus concept as a promising approach for full-range presbyopia correction.
