Purpose
To report visual outcomes of asymmetric refractive EDOF IOL implanted using Micro Monovision technique
Setting
Private tertiary eye hospital, Thane, India
Methods
It’s a retrospective study where subjects who underwent bilateral implantation of asymmetric refractive EDOF using micro monovision technique were enrolled. All patients underwent optical biometry for IOL power calculations using ARGOS. For first eye surgery, IOL with power corresponding to first minus refraction was implanted. For the second eye surgery, IOL with power corresponding to either first or second minus was chosen and implanted based on first eye surgery distance or near vision outcome. Uncorrected distance (UDVA) and near visual acuity (UCNVA) were noted at one month follow up for first and second eye and its distribution were assessed using cross tabulation and chi square test.
Results
Total of 30 patients with mean±SD age of 62.1±11.53 years underwent bilateral implantation of segmental EDOF IOL. After first eye surgery, 63% eyes had 20/20 and 37% eyes had 20/20 partial UDVA. Also 60% and 40% of the eyes had N6 and N8 UCNVA respectively. On the other hand after second eye surgery 67% eyes had 20/20 and 33% eyes had 20/20 partial UDVA however 80% and 20% of the eyes achieved N6 and N8 UCNVA (chi square: 2.85, p=0.089) respectively. Binocularly, all patients achieved 20/20, N6 uncorrected visual acuity for distance and near respectively.
Conclusions
The micro monovision technique using asymmetric refractive EDOF IOLs resulted in similar distribution of UCDVA during first and second eye surgery however yields 20% improvement in near visual acuity distribution post second eye surgery. Binocularly all eyes achieved excellent uncorrected distance and near visual acuities.
