Purpose
To evaluate early binocular visual and refractive outcomes of the Balanced Extended Vision Procedure (BEVPx™), combining two non-diffractive extended depth of focus intraocular lenses with complementary depth-of-focus profiles for presbyopia correction.
Setting
Hospital La Arruzafa, Cordoba, and OftalVist Alicante, Alicante. Spain.
Methods
This prospective pilot study included 15 patients undergoing bilateral cataract surgery or refractive lens exchange. Ocular dominance was determined preoperatively. An Asqelio™ EDOF intraocular lens was implanted in the dominant eye and an Asqelio™ PairedFocus™ intraocular lens in the nondominant eye. Binocular uncorrected and distance-corrected visual acuity at distance (4 m), intermediate (67 cm), and near (40 cm), binocular defocus curves, and refractive outcomes were evaluated three months postoperatively. Functional vision was defined as visual acuity ≤0.20 logMAR.
Results
At three months postoperatively, mean binocular uncorrected distance visual acuity was -0.04±0.06 logMAR and distance-corrected distance visual acuity -0.07±0.05 logMAR. Mean binocular uncorrected intermediate visual acuity was 0.03±0.09 logMAR and distance-corrected intermediate visual acuity 0.02±0.11 logMAR. Mean binocular uncorrected near visual acuity was 0.11±0.11 logMAR and distance-corrected near visual acuity 0.08±0.12 logMAR. Binocular defocus curves showed a smooth continuous range of vision, maintaining visual acuity ≤0.20 logMAR from distance through intermediate and into the near range. Mean residual spherical equivalent was 0.10 ± 0.31 D and residual cylinder -0.31±0.35 D.
Conclusions
Early clinical outcomes of the BEVPx™ approach demonstrate excellent binocular visual acuity at distance, intermediate, and near, with a continuous functional range of vision and high refractive accuracy. Combining two non-diffractive EDOF-based intraocular lenses with complementary depth-of-focus profiles may represent a promising alternative for full-range presbyopia correction.
