Purpose
To compare visual outcomes and contrast sensitivity of 2 refractive Extended Depth of Focus (EDOF) PC-IOL with the same optical and design platform, but made a different hydrophobic acrylic material: the Acrysof Vivity and the Clareon (glistening-free)Vivity.
Setting
Clinique Juge, Marseille, France
Methods
Retrospective observational, study with 6 months follow-up. 50 eyes of 38 patients (70.0 ± 5.9 years-old) implanted with the toric or non-toric Vivity Clareon IOL and 100 eyes of 82 patients (71.2 ± 8.3 years-old) implanted with the toric or non-toric version Vivity Acrysof IOL were evaluated. Monocular and binocular uncorrected (UCVA) and corrected (CDVA) distance visual acuity; binocular uncorrected intermediate (UIVA at 66 cm) and near (UNVA at 40 cm) visual acuity; contrast sensitivity was evaluated with the ETDRS charts at contrasts 100%, 25% and 9%; photic effects and patient satisfaction were also assessed.
Results
MRSE for the Clareon Vivity / Acrysof Vivity were respectively, -0.21 ± 0.30 D / -0,23 ± 0.49 D. Mean monocular distance logMAR UDVA and CDVA ,0.06 ± 0.15 / 0.09 ± 0.12 and 0.00 ± 0.02 / 0.07 ± 0.02.; mean IVA with correction for far was 0.04 ± 0.12 / 0.22 ± 0.14; mean NVA with correction for far was was 0.12 ± 0.06 / 0.22 ± 0.18. The ETDRS contrast sensitivity at 100%, was respectively, -0,03 ± 0.09 / -0,06 ± 0.22; at 25 % : 0,11 ± 0.09 / 0,10 ± 0.09; at 9% : 0,30 ± 0.13 / 0,31 ± 0.08.
Conclusions
The precise comparison of the same platform of the 2 EDOF IOLs made of a different hydrophobic material material showed comparable refractive outcomes, visual performance, and satisfaction with overall vision without glasses in patients implanted with either the Acrysof or the Clarion models of the Vivity EDOF IOL. Contrast sensitivity did not differ at 6 months but should be reevaluated at a longer follow-up.
