Purpose

To evaluate the visual performance and defocus profile of the first inverted meniscus family of intraocular lenses (ArtIOLs25®, ArtIOLs40® and ArtIOLs70®), and to position each model within a contemporary clinical classification of simultaneous‑vision IOLs based on objectively measurable clinical outcomes. The inverted meniscus design aims to improve peripheral optics while maintaining high-quality central vision and increasing depth of focus through negative spherical aberration.

Setting

Oftalvist Murcia, Spain

Methods

ArtIOLs® (Voptica S.L.) are aspheric, refractive inverted meniscus IOLs engineered with negative spherical aberration to extend depth of focus. Clinical performance was assessed in 257 eyes implanted with ArtIOLs25®, ArtIOLs40® or ArtIOLs70®. Monocular best‑corrected defocus curves were obtained, and Depth of Field (DoFi) was defined as the dioptric range over which visual acuity remained ≤0.20 LogMAR. DoFi and distance‑, intermediate‑, and near‑corrected visual acuities (DCVA, DCIVA, DCNVA) were used to assign each model to a functional vision category within the Functional Vision Framework as Partial Depth of Field - PDoF: Narrow, Enhanced, Extended and Full Depth of Field -- FDoF: Steep, Smooth, Continuous.

Results

ArtIOLs25® (n=45) monocular best corrected defocus curve showed a visual acuity ≤0.20 logMAR across 1.40 D, corresponding with the PDoF- Enhanced range and provided improved intermediate vision (DCIVA 0.29 logMAR) while preserving excellent distance vision (DCVA 0.00 LogMAR). ArtIOLs40® (n=101) reached a DoFi of 1.65 D, meeting the criteria for PDoFi-Extended category with visual acuities of DCVA −0.05, DCIVA 0.12, and DCNVA 0.36 LogMAR, indicating functional extension towards near. ArtIOLs70® (n=101), achieved a DoFi of 2.35 D, consistent with FDoFi-Continuous performance, and delivered high visual acuity outcomes across all distances (DCVA −0.04, DCIVA 0.03, and DCNVA 0.20 LogMAR).

Conclusions

The ArtIOLs® inverted meniscus family demonstrates a progressive expansion of functional vision across models, with consistent simultaneous‑vision performance over the range of focus. ArtIOLs25® (PDoF‑Enhanced) enhances intermediate vision while maintaining excellent distance acuity, ArtIOLs40® (PDoF‑Extended) further broadens the functional range toward near, and ArtIOLs70® (FDoF‑Continuous) provides full‑range, high‑quality vision at distance, intermediate and near, supporting a high degree of spectacle independence.
