Purpose
To evaluate the first clinical outcomes of a new purely refractive partial range of field extended intraocular lens (IOL).
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology. Vithas Medimar International Hospital, Alicante, Spain
Methods
Fourteen eyes of 7 patients (age, 43 to 82 years old) were included in this study. All subjects underwent uneventful cataract surgery with bilateral implantation of the AIALA EDOF IOL (AJL Ophthalmic, Vitoria, Spain). Visual, refractive, and defocus curve outcomes were evaluated during the first postoperative month.
Results
Mean postoperative monocular logMAR uncorrected distance and intermediate (66 cm) visual acuity were 0.19±0.15 and 0.37±0.05, respectively. Postoperative spherical equivalent was within ±0.50 D and ±1.00 D in 86.0% and 100% of eyes, respectively. Mean postoperative monocular logMAR corrected distance and intermediate (66 cm) visual acuity were 0.08±0.10 and 0.34±0.05, respectively. Mean distance-corrected visual acuity was better than 0.20 logMAR for defocus between +1.00 and -1.50 D.
Conclusions
The purely refractive partial range of field AIALA EDOF provides good levels of distance vision, with a functional level of intermediate vision. Future studies including larger samples of patients and with longer follow-up should be conducted to confirm these preliminary outcomes.
