Purpose
To retrospectively evaluate the long-term visual function of glaucomatous eyes implanted with an extended depth-of-field intraocular lens (EDOF IOL) compared with normal eyes implanted with an EDOF IOL.
Setting
Department of Ophthalmology, Tokyo Dental College Suidobashi Hospital.
Methods
This retrospective study included eyes with primary open-angle glaucoma (Group G) and normal eyes (Group N), all of which were implanted with EDOF IOLs (ZXR00V, ZXW150–375; Johnson & Johnson). Eyes with corrected distance visual acuity (CDVA) ≤ 0.8 (decimal), posterior capsule opacification, corneal or retinal disease, or a history of refractive or filtration surgery were excluded. Uncorrected visual acuity (UCVA), CDVA, and photopic and mesopic contrast sensitivity with and without glare (CSV-1000) were measured.
Results
Group G consisted of 20 eyes of 20 patients (mean age, 69.8 ± 10.1 years; postoperative period, 1.5–7.3 years). The mean deviation and foveal threshold on the Humphrey Field Analyzer 30-2 were −5.0 ± 5.2 (range, +0.2 to −16.6) dB and 34.7 ± 1.8 (range, 31.0 to 38.0) dB. Group N comprised 19 eyes of 19 patients (mean age, 66.6 ± 13.6 years; postoperative period, 1.6–7.8 years; p = 0.62 and 0.15, respectively). There were no significant differences in UCVA or CDVA between the groups (p = 0.38 and 0.45). Contrast sensitivity did not differ significantly between the groups at any spatial frequency (p ≥ 0.05).
Conclusions
In the long-term postoperative period, visual function in glaucomatous eyes implanted with EDOF IOLs was comparable to that in normal eyes.
