Purpose
To report our initial clinical experience with a new non-diffractive extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lens (IOL), the PureSee (Johnson & Johnson Vision, USA).
Setting
Ein Tal Eye Center, Tel Aviv, Israel
Methods
This retrospective study evaluated 47 eyes of 31 patients who underwent uneventful cataract surgery with implantation of a non-diffractive EDOF IOL (PureSee). Main outcome measures at 1 month postoperatively included uncorrected distance visual acuity (UDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA), refractive outcomes, and patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs).
Results
The study included 47 eyes of 31 patients (18 women), with a mean age of 68.0 ± 9.7 years (range 41–85 years). Nineteen eyes (72%) received the toric model. Mean postoperative spherical equivalent was −0.15 ± 0.30 D (range −1.00 to +0.63 D). Mean UDVA and UIVA were excellent (0.06 ± 0.07 and 0.12 ± 0.12 LogMAR, respectively), with good UNVA (0.14 ± 0.14 LogMAR). Twenty-seven patients (87%) completed the PROM questionnaire. Spectacle independence was excellent for distance (26/27, 96%), good for intermediate (20/27, 74%), and moderate for near (12/27, 44%). One patient (3.7%) reported significant photic phenomena. Twenty patients (74%) indicated they would choose the same IOL again.
Conclusions
The PureSee IOL, a non-diffractive EDOF lens, demonstrated excellent distance and intermediate visual outcomes with a low incidence of photic phenomena. These early results suggest high patient satisfaction and favorable refractive predictability.
