Purpose
To compare real-world visual performance and patient-reported photic phenomena among three contemporary refractive extended depth-of-focus (EDOF) intraocular lenses following cataract surgery.
Setting
Single tertiary referral eye centre
Methods
This retrospective comparative study analysed eyes implanted with one of three refractive EDOF intraocular lenses after uncomplicated cataract surgery at a single tertiary referral centre. To allow a focused and clinically relevant comparison, the analysis was limited to key outcome measures, including uncorrected distance and intermediate visual acuity, binocular defocus performance, photopic contrast sensitivity, and patient-reported photic phenomena
Results
All three EDOF intraocular lenses provided good uncorrected distance visual acuity. However, distinct differences were observed in intermediate visual performance and binocular defocus characteristics, reflecting lens-specific optical designs. Patient-reported photic phenomena varied across groups, with different qualitative profiles rather than uniform patterns. Photopic contrast sensitivity remained within clinically acceptable limits in all groups.
Conclusions
In a real-world clinical setting, refractive EDOF intraocular lenses demonstrate distinct visual and photic profiles rather than interchangeable performance. Recognition of these design-dependent differences may support more individualised intraocular lens selection based on patient expectations, lifestyle, and tolerance for photic phenomena.
