Purpose

To evaluate visual acuity, refractive accuracy, spectacle independence, and photic phenomenon following phacoemulsification with implantation of the RayOne Galaxy spiral full range of vision intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting

Retrospective study conducted at tertiary centre

Methods

This  study included 100 eyes undergoing cataract surgery with implantation of RayOne Galaxy or Galaxy Toric IOL. All eyes were targeted for emmetropia with toric correction where indicated. Post operative assessment at 1 and 3 months included uncorrected and corrected distance visual acuity (UDVA, CDVA), uncorrected intermediate visual acuity (UIVA at 66 cm), uncorrected near visual acuity (UNVA at 35 to 40 cm), refractive outcomes, spectacle dependence and patient reported glare and halos.

Results

Mean post operative spherical equivalent was – 0.06 ± 0.32 D. 92 % of eyes were within ± 0.50 D and 98% within  ± 1.00 D of target.

94 % achieved UDVA ≥ 6/6 and 100 % achieved ≥ 6/9.

100 % achieved N6 at intermediate distance (66cm).

90 % achieved N6 at near  (35 cm) and 100 % achieved ≥ N8.

High levels of spectacle independence were reported for distance and intermediate tasks with strong near independence. Photic phenomenon were mild, with reduced halo and glare symptoms compared to traditional diffractive trifocal designs.

Conclusions

The Rayone Galaxy spiral full- range IOL provides excellent visual acuity across distance, intermediate, and near ranges with high spectacle independence and minimal dysphotopsia. Its non –diffractive spiral optic design enables a smooth defocus profile comparable to trifocal IOLS while potentially reducing photic disturbances.
