Purpose

To evaluate binocular and monocular defocus curves and patient-reported visual quality following bilateral implantation of a new Full Range of Vision intraocular lens (IOL).

Setting

All surgeries were / will be performed at the Breyer-Kaymak-Klabe Eye Surgery and Premium Eyes in Duesseldorf, Germany, member of the International Vision Correction Research Center (IVCRC.net) by one single surgeon (Breyer).

Methods

In this retrospective quality management investigation, patients (n= 20) underwent bilateral cataract surgery with implantation of the LuxLife IOL (Bausch+Lomb). Postoperative evaluation was performed 3 months after surgery. Defocus curves were measured binocular without correction (+1.0 D to −4.0 D) and monocular with distance correction. Patient-reported outcomes were assessed using the validated McAlinden Quality of Vision (QoV) questionnaire, evaluating frequency, severity, and bothersome nature of visual symptoms.

Results

The binocular defocus curve analysis demonstrated a smooth and continuous transition of visual acuity across the tested vergence range, indicating a broad functional range of vision with minimal loss of visual quality at different distances. McAlinden QoV analysis revealed high patient satisfaction with low reported frequency and severity of photic phenomena. The majority of patients reported spectacle independence for distance and intermediate activities and bookprint reading.

Conclusions

The LuxLife IOL provides a broad functional range of vision with good binocular performance. Patient-reported outcomes confirm high visual quality, minimal photic phenomena, and a high level of spectacle independence, while defocus curve analysis demonstrates effective distance, intermediate and near vision.
